Missouri high council, 1834; Far West high council, 1837; and the Salt Lake
City high council, 1848. Returned to Kirtland from Missouri in July 1835 and
worked on the temple. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley with Mormon pioneers, 1847.
Counselor in Salt Lake City 16th Ward bishopric. Died at Salem, Utah County,

Jacobs,
Henry Bailey (1817-1886), born at Manchester, Niagara County, New York.
Converted to Mormonism in 1833. In 1838 he moved to Missouri and served as
justice of the peace in Richmond, Ray County. Married Zina Diantha Huntington
in Nauvoo, Illinois, 1841. Enroute to Utah from Nauvoo in 1846, he was called
on a proselyting mission to England with his brother-in-law, Oliver B.
Huntington. Arriving in Winter Quarters in 1847, both men were excommunicated
for bringing plural wives with them but were later rebaptized. Continued on to
Utah in 1848. In 1851 he was disfellowshipped and later excommunicated. Moved
to California, remaining there until 1880, when he returned to Salt Lake City,

George Fitch. Son of Stephen James. Born 1797 in Massachusetts. Married
Caroline C. (born and previously married in Connecticut). Moved to Ohio by
1820. Located in Brownhelm, Lorain County, Ohio, by 1830. Three known children:
Stephen, William, and Frederick. Stepdaughter, Jane A. Baptized by June 1831.
Appointed to be ordained priest June 1831. Ordained elder by Hyrum Smith 18
November 1831. Disfellowshipped. On 4 April 1834 council of high priests
reconsidered complaint against James and extended hand of fellowship.
Additional charges brought November 1834. Did not gather with Saints in
Missouri or Illinois. In 1844 contacted by Simeon Carter and encouraged to move
to Nauvoo. Despite promise to do so, remained in Ohio. Listed in 1850 census as
farmer with assets of $1,000. Died in Brownhelm, Lorain County, Ohio, November

conversion, appointed to the Kirtland, Ohio, high council, 1836. Married Marian
Evans, 1841. Extensive proselyting in eastern states, 1835-1844. He followed

Pennsylvania, in April 1845, Rigdon appointed James one of his counselors.

Missouri in company with William Hobart 1833. Married to Daniel Shearer. No
known children. Received Patriarchal Blessing from William Smith in Nauvoo 25
July 1845. Received endowment 22 January 1846 in Nauvoo Temple. Died in Salt

children: Willis, Marilla, Mary Ann, and Emma Maria. Baptized 15 April 1836.
Moved to Kirtland, Ohio, in spring of 1837. Purchased land in Kirtland at
suggestion of Joseph Smith. Member of Kirtland Camp 1838. Ordained seventy in
Far West, Missouri 28 December 1838. Moved to Nauvoo 1839. Justice of peace in
Nauvoo. Appointed member of Nauvoo high council 19 January 1841; acknowledged
in position 6 February 1841. Served as high councilor 1841-45. Received
endowment 21 December 1845. Sealed to Jane Scott 12 July 1845. Six known

Opposed the conversion of his family to Mormonism but moved to Kirtland, Ohio,
with them in 1833. Embittered over his family’s conversion, he separated from

1837. Became a seventy in 1852. Shot by Delos M. Gibson in Salt Lake City

Hampshire, to Israel Johnson and Abigail Higgins. Married Mary Elsa Jacobs on
June 22, 1800, and they had fifteen children. Was baptized during the spring of
1831. Joseph Smith and his family lived in his home, 1831-32. Hosted church
meetings in Hiram, Ohio. Was ordained an elder and later a high priest in 1833.
In 1837 he was rejected as a high councilor and consequently withdrew from the

Kirtland Temple. Received blessing 8 March 1835 for working on Kirtland Temple.
Charter member of and owned stock in Kirtland Safety Society 1837. Rejected as
high councilor 4 September 1837. Became disaffected from Church leaders
1837-38. Withdrew from Church by 1838. Died 30 July 1843, in Kirtland, Lake

store, postmaster and newspaper editor. Moved on to Salt Lake City, 1860, to

Joseph escape from jail in 1838. He was rebaptized on Mar. 8, 1846. Went to
Salt Lake City in 1847; served as a bishop in Tooele. Died on Dec. 9, 1861, in

Married Sarah Long (Lang) on Sept. 4, 1834, and they had two children. Marched
in Zion’s Camp. Allowed McLellin to board at his home in Kirtland during the
winter of 1834. Was ordained an apostle on Feb. 14, 1835. Preached with
McLellin, May through July 1835. Charter member of the Kirtland Safety Society
in 1837, in which he lost money. Charged Joseph Smith with slander and lying in
May 1837. Disfellowshipped on Sept. 3, 1837, and subsequently excommunicated
for apostasy on Apr. 13, 1838. Drowned in the Mississippi on Dec. 20, 1856.

Ohio. Married Betsy Curtis, 1834. Died at Parkman, Geauga County, Ohio. [PJSv1]
Jolly,
William (1777-1863), farmer; father-in-law of David Whitmer. Born in
Massachusetts. Daughter, Julia Ann, married David, 1831. Living in Parkman,
Geauga County, Ohio, when he joined the Latter-day Saints. He apparently did
not remain with the Church. Died at Parkman, Ohio. [PJSv1]
Jonas,
Abraham (1801-1864), merchant, lawyer; born at Exeter, Devonshire,
England. Migrated to America in 1819. Resided in Ohio and then Kentucky, where
he served in the state legislature, 1828-1830, 1833. He was grand master of the
grand lodge of Kentucky masons, 1833. Moved to Illinois; served in the
legislature, and one term as master in chancery. He became the first grand
master of Illinois, and was instrumental in establishing the Nauvoo Lodge in
1841. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1844 and practiced law until his death.
Served as postmaster of Quincy. A friend of Abraham Lincoln. Chairman of the
arrangements committee for the Lincoln-Douglas debate in Quincy. One son served
the Union and three others the Confederacy during the Civil War. [PJSv2]
JONES,
Esquire, hosted McLellin on Mar. 9, 1833, in Calhoun or Pike County,
Illinois. Possibly John Jones. [McLellin]
Jones,
J., is possibly Jacob Jones (d. 1857), who was one of the earliest
settlers in the Paris, Illinois, region in the early 1820s. He came from
Whitehall, New York. The marriage of his daughter, Narissa, was the first
performed in the area. Owned the first store. Fed breakfast to McLellin, July
22, 1834. Merchant, prominent citizen, and he served for a time as the county
treasurer. Died in 1857. A James Jones also lived in the area. [McLellin]
Jones,
Josiah (178?-?), resident
of Kirtland, Ohio. Appointed town clerk when Kirtland township was first
organized in 1817. Taught school, 1819-20. [PJSv2]
Jones,
Levi (b. 1816), was born on Aug. 22, 1816, in Cortland, New York, to
Peter and Eunice Jones. Married Sarah Zolide Reed. Marched in Zion’s Camp,
1834. As an elder, accompanied McLellin to an appointment in Eugene, Indiana,
on Aug. 7, 1834, and preached there. Baptismal date recorded as 1841.

Sister, is probably Sarah Zolide Reed Jones, wife of Levi Jones. Had
been sick for years and was healed by the priesthood. [McLellin]

Stephen, hosted McLellin and Luke Johnson in St. Clairesville, New
