General rules
Poets may submit up to three (3) poems for consideration. For publication formatting
reasons, poems should generally not exceed thirty-five (35) lines, including lines
between stanzas.
Entries should be accompanied by a cover page which includes the author’s
name and all relevant contact information, the year of author’s graduation
from BYU with college and degree, and/or a statement that the entrant subscribes
to BYU Studies. List each contest entry by title on the cover page. Please include
two (2) copies of each poem when submitting by regular mail or attach a file of
each entry when submitting on CD or by email. When submitting by email, please attach files of your work.
Neither the name of the author nor any other identifying information should appear on the
copies of the poems(s). Entries will not be returned.
BYU Studies has the right of first refusal to publish all entries. We do not accept
poems that have been published or that are under consideration elsewhere, that have previously won any awards in another
poetry contest, or that may be the property of another publisher. Do not simultaneously
submit any poem to our contest and to another writing contest. Authors may not submit
contest poetry to any other contest or publication until the BYU Studies contest results
are announced or until receiving a letter indicating that the poetry will not be published
in BYU Studies. As a general matter, poetry published in BYU Studies is chosen from
contest entries.
