Lectures on Religion and the Founding of the American Republic: [Chapter 8] "Awash in a Sea of Faith": America and the Second Great Awakening

At the outset, I wish to credit distinguished Yale historian Jon Butler for the colorful phrase that makes up the forepart of my title. Though my approach will diverge somewhat from Butler's fascinating and significant revisionist study of American religious history, I find his phrase felicitous for capturing an image of waves of religious fervor washing over the American cultural landscape between the Revolution and the Civil War.
