Emma Smith wed Lewis Bidamon on Joseph Smith’s birthday, 23 December 1847. In the eyes of many, Emma stepped out of her unique role when she married Lewis, who was not a member of any church, although he did help establish a Congregational church in Canton, Illinois, in 1842. His opinion of Joseph Smith was that Joseph was honest but might have been deceived. What then was the relationship between Emma and Lewis? What kind of man was he?
