As we rejoice that President Nelson, Elder Cook, and their wives meet with Latter-day Saints in Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Brazil, we look back to the first area conference in Latin America, held in Mexico City, August 1972. (The very first area conference outside the United States was held in Manchester, UK, in 1971). President Harold B. Lee, his counselors in the First Presidency, and several members of the Quorum of the Twelve attended the Mexico City conference. The Ensign published this article about the enthusiasm the Saints expressed for being able to meet their Church leaders and the messages shared. BYU Studies published this article of photographs of the Mexico City conference, showing Church members, the dancers, and the choir. We hope these articles will bring appreciation of the desire of Church leaders to out among the Saints around the world.
