Private Devotion in the Public Schools



The question of private devotion in the public schools has been a contentious one since the case of Engle vs. Vitale. Persons opposed to any official recognition of divinity have used the decision to argue for the extirpation of all reference to deity from public life. On the other hand, the decision has been used as emotional fodder by radicals of another ilk to whip devotees into furious indignation over the banishment of God from the classroom. Whatever the perspective, the decision simply resists receding quietly into the constitutional background.
