Fifty years ago, Professor Ray C. Hillam was in Vietnam as a Fullbright-Hays Professor. This article, which appeared in BYU Studies in Autumn 1967, discusses the nature of the Vietnam War, as he saw it, and the challenge confronting the newly elected South Vietnamese government and its allies.
The war in Vietnam is not war as we have known it in the past. We Americans like to have our wars simple, and we think they should be for one purpose—victory. But the war in Vietnam defies this description.
