Reminiscences of a Trip to Cedar Breaks

Author G. Homer Durham

Reflecting on a time when automobile and horse-drawn travel overlapped, the Arizona State University president shares in this personal essay his memories of Mormon childhood growing up in southern Utah, particularly his reminiscences of taking trips up Parowan Canyon to get out of the summer heat. He describes unsuccessful attempts to summit Brian Head Peak in a Ford touring car, the trip being interrupted by herds of sheep blocking the road, and he reflects on a camping trip made by covered wagon. He compares his awe at seeing Cedar Breaks for the first time to Brigham Young's inspiration when he declared, "This is the place," upon first seeing the Salt Lake Valley.
