The Search for the Physical Cause of Jesus Christ's Death

Author W. Reid Litchfield

Clues in the Bible describing Jesus's crucifixion have led to theories of the physical cause of his death. The best known theories are that he died of a ruptured heart, asphyxia, cardiovascular collapse, aspiration, fatal syncope, or that he may not have died on the cross at all. In this article, Reid Litchfield examines those proposals and makes his own argument that Jesus died of a cardiac arrhythmia. This diagnosis best matches the description given in the New Testament.
