John S. Tanner, the BYU academic vice president from 2004-2011, writes about the influence of the King James Bible throughout American history. He dives into how the Bible has impacted America through the prophet Joseph Smith, the pilgrim John Winthrop, the president Abraham Lincoln, and the preacher Martin Luther King Jr., through their powerful speeches. Tanner references specific passages and techniques from the Bible that are evident in these addresses. He also notes that at the beginning of this country, religion was hugely involved in everyday matters and our leaders were heavily influenced by the Bible, however as time has passed, our country has become less focused on religion and the influence of the Bible has lessened.
