Any artist that tries to depict the Savior faces a dilemma. Everyone wants to know Christ personally yet we do not know what he looks like. After working through the issues of historical accuracy of what Christ may have looked like, Christensen decided that any artist must use a generically acceptable icon for the man to be recognizable a Christ, and thus he must have a beard and shoulder length hair. Additionally, artists must come to terms with the limits of their own understanding, as any painting of the Savior is only a "dim shadow of a glorious reality." Christensen points to his favorite images of the Savior, those by Carl Bloch, Rembrandt, Velazquez, and Caravaggio.
