Appendix 11: Utah Territorial Militia (Nauvoo Legion): 10th Regiment Battalion and Company Muster Rolls

10 October 1857

This appendix reconstructs the original muster of October 1857, once owned by Daniel H. Wells, now housed in the Utah State Archives and Records Service. Taken just a month after the Mountain Meadows Massacre, the tally provides an effective census of much of the male population of the region. Original spelling has been retained, even if other sources use more familiar forms. Faded ink and unclear penmanship make some readings difficult. In the few truly doubtful cases, dashes and/or question marks within brackets are used. If first names appear as initials but the person is well documented elsewhere, the full Christian name appears in brackets; likewise, if an abbreviated form is likely to confuse, it is expanded within brackets. Standard superscriptions used here include:

Notes

1. A “Morton” Anderson appears in Company C of the Parowan muster rolls of 1852; however, since there are also references to a “Miles” Anderson in contemporary sources, “M. Anderson” could refer to either man.

2. Numerous contemporary references confirm that this entry refers to “Commodore Perry” Liston.

3. This is a variant of “Heinrich Elliker,” brother of Philip Klingensmith’s plural wife, Margarethe. Their father, Heinrich&nbps;Sr., died of cholera on the passage west (as did several siblings), so the reference can only be to the son.
