Explanation of Appendix 2

Main Sources. Data in this table is based primarily on the sources coded in the appendix as numbers 1 through 5:

Source 1. “Names of the company and their outfit for Little Salt Lake,” Deseret News, 16 Nov 1850. Because it is the first document listing names of those called to serve as iron missionaries, it is designated the “call list.”

Source 2. “Names of persons over 14 years of age, on 21st December [1850], gone to Iron county, led by elder George A. Smith,” Deseret News, 11 Jan 1851. Since this article reports those already underway for the Iron Mission, it is designated the “departure list.”

Source 3. “Names of the Pioneers who came to Parowan under the leadership of Apostle George A. Smith . . . ,” listed in Henry Lunt’s diary, pp. 15–18, giving male members of the company by name, with the number of women and children accompanying the party summarized. This source is designated the “Lunt list.”

Source 4. “Elders’ Quorum List,” a hand-written list of names dated 9 Feb 1851, listing many of the male members of the Iron Mission, their current ages and priesthood callings. The source used here is an LDS Church Archives microfilm of the original.

Source 5. “1851 Utah Census,” begun 12 May 1851 as per Brigham Young’s instructions. The version used here is Zabriskie and Robinson’s published transcript of the Washington, D.C., original, with minor errors in the transcript corrected after consulting LDS Church Family History Library microfilm of original (film 0,025,540).

Lists of names given in the primary sources are not, as expected, identical. For instance, some names which appear on the “call list” appear nowhere else. Depending on how each list is interpreted, there are 21 or 22 names on Source 3, the “Lunt list,” which do not appear on Source 4, the “Elders’ Quorum list.” Conversely, 22 or 23 names on the “Elders’ Quorum list” do not appear on the “Lunt list.” Spelling of names in this appendix follows Zabriskie and Robinson.

Inconsistencies are often difficult if not impossible to reconcile—explanations have been included if possible. Recording, reading, transcription and/or typographical mistakes are common. Therefore, spelling variants have been noted where known. Journalists and clerks depended heavily on oral sources and nineteenth-century spelling practices were far more flexible than ours.

Zabriskie explained that the Iron County census was not taken until 1851 (as part of the National Census of 1850), first, because the act creating Utah Territory was slow to arrive in Salt Lake City and, second, because proper forms had not arrived from Washington. Thomas Bullock, under the direction of Brigham Young, had made an unofficial enumeration of the population which did not include essential information required in the census. (This may be the 1 Apr 1851, “Census of Utah Territory” now in the LDS Church Archives, Salt Lake City.) The official census began on 12 May 1851 in Iron County, two days after Young’s arrival on his first trip to assess the well-being and progress of the Iron Mission. The federal record is difficult to read and interpret. Letter forms for es, as and os are often identical, as are forms for ns, rs, us and vs. Zabriskie also notes misstatements of fact (especially ages), including some cases where persons are misnamed and/or placed in wrong families. These have been corrected here, wherever found.

Additional Sources. In addition to the five sources noted above, two other primary sources are used: excerpts from George A. Smith’s journal and excerpts from Andrew Jenson’s “Parowan Ward History, 1849–1900.” The former is coded to “GS,” the latter to “JA.” In addition, several other sources (“OS”) are cited, including:

ACL. The “Anson Call list,” taken from Smith’s journal, entry of 31 May 1851, comprising men and women who journeyed under Anson Call’s leadership to Parowan, arriving a few days before Brigham Young’s larger party reached the Iron Mission.

LDR. Any “Luella Dalton reference” in this appendix is to her History of Iron County Mission, Parowan, Utah, especially to persons arriving there on 8 May 1851 (pp. 39–40). Dalton often neglects to cite specific sources. Therefore, she is included here as a secondary, not primary, source.

IMR. This LDS Church Archives document, labeled “Iron Mission Record,” is explained in ch. 3, n. 45. The list being used here identifies those who returned with Brigham Young to Salt Lake City, after the president’s visit south in May 1851. It is not clear whether all of those who returned to Salt Lake City at this time are included in this list.

McG. The “MacGregor list” is identified in ch. 2, n. 104. Some of the newborns listed on it appear in appendix 2; some do not. Likewise, some of the newborns reported in the census do not appear in the MacGregor list.

The Iron County population was shifting at the time of Brigham Young’s visit, just as the census and other records were being created. Many families of missionaries arrived at this same time. Appendix 2 attempts to indicate these additional arrivals where possible.

Notes

1. All births listed as in “Utah” are listed in census as occurring in “Deseret.”

2. Source 4 microfilm shows paper tear; assuming “Simeon” is now-unreadable word, rest of entry reads “F. Houd.”

3. Lovinia possibly listed as age 15 in census to disguise status as plural wife.

4. “John D.” (Jr.) possibly confused with unnamed son, born 19 Mar 1851.

5. Philip left to join Iron Mission on 15 Apr 1851 (as per Deseret News of 17 May 1851 [vol. 1, no. 33], p. 259).

6. One of three men leaving for California by permission (see GS: 21–27 Apr 1851).

7. Author’s note: not their child; their first child born 10 Jun 1851.

8. Source 5: age 14, born in Deseret, is a misreading of “14 da[ys]” in original.

9. One of three men leaving for California by permission (see GS: 21–27 Apr 1851).

10. Actually John D. Lee’s teamster, Frenchman Paul Royls. Joseph Millett records his nickname as “Pull Wah.”

11. Sometimes referred to as “Peter A. Dibble” (see chapter 2).

12. GS reports arrival of “C. L. Smith” on 8 Apr 1851.

13. Source 5: “Susan A.”; OS: McG records Susannah’s parents as John and Elizabeth Steele.

14. Leaves for Salt Lake City on 28 Apr 1851, “contrary to counsel.”

15. Leaves for Salt Lake City on 28 Apr 1851, “contrary to counsel.”

16. 1: “George A.”; 2: “G. C.”; 3: “George C. Yong”; 5: “George Young”; JA: “George C.”
