Notes
1. Military Companies: The designation “C” represents a member of the mounted (cavalry) company [Territorial Militia Muster Rolls of 1851–1867 for Iron County, document no. 3287, acc. no. 014279, Utah State Archives and Records Service]. The designation “F” represents a member of the infantry (foot) company [identical source; document no. 3285]. “John Stoddard” is listed as a member of Company F, but the muster roll does not indicate whether this is the father or the son.
2. Bulloch Sources: The designation “a” refers to “Life Sketch of David Bulloch” [full cite at ch. 6, n. 10]; designation “b” refers to “Facts Furnished by David Bulloch” [full cite at ch. 6, n. 24]. The four names given an asterisk in this column (George Hunter, Henry Lunt Sr., Joseph Walker, and George Wood) are mentioned in “Facts Furnished by David Bulloch” prior to the list of first settlers. These men are described (with “many others”) as having “come over from Parowan” to start the “first Old Fort corral,” distinguishing them from those grouped together later in the document as a cohesive party of original settlers.
3. Chatterley Sources: The designation “a” refers to a list of first settlers of Cedar City, passed down from John Chatterley, its author, to his daughter Nancy Walker [see ch. 6, n. 63]; the designation “b” refers to Chatterley’s “History of Cedar City.”
4. Whittaker Source: An “x” in this column refers to the Journal of James Whittaker. In several entries, Whittaker refers to two men with the “Johnson” surname. One is called “Bishop Johnson,” the other “Bro. Johnson.” No first names are mentioned. The relevant dates are 30 Nov 1851, 6 Mar 1852 and 6 Jun 1852.
5. Secondary Sources: The designation “a” refers to Andrew Jenson’s “Manuscript History of Cedar City;” the designation “b” refers to Gladys McConnell’s untitled talk on Cedar City history.
