Cover painting: The Tree of Life. Hand-colored engraving, printed for John Hagerty, Baltimore, 1791, courtesy Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, Maryland. John Hagerty (b. 1747) was a Methodist preacher and a printer-publisher in Baltimore in the 1790s, where he specialized in printing evangelical works, including a biography of John Wesley. In addition to The Tree of Life, Hagerty published the prints The Tree of Virtues and The Tree of Vices, motifs used in religious art for centuries. The Tree of Life, based on Revelation 22:2, brings forth twelve fruits of salvation. A large crowd is seen complacently strolling along the Broad Way to the Bottomless Pit, where the Devil and “Babylon Mother of Harlots” beckon. The sinners are labelled “pride,” “chambering & wantonness,” “quack,” “usury,” and “extortion.” James H. Hutson, Religion and the Founding of the American Republic (Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, 1998), iv; also available online at https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/religion/.
