This dissertation is dedicated to George Burrill, and to my children, Shauna Redford-Schlosser, James and Amy Redford; which seems an insufficient recognition of the significant role each has played throughout the process of my education. In fact, my entire family has been supportive, and I’m especially pleased my mother and father, Frank and Phyllis Van Wagenen, will watch me graduate. I hope that event is partial payment for infusing their children with a love of learning and respect for education. ^[vii]
