1 John 5

₁ Every person who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and every person who loves the Father² also loves the One who has been begotten of Him. ₂ This is how we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and observe His commandments. ₃ For this is the love of God: that we keep His commandments—and they are not burdensome, ₄ for whatever has been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world: our faith.

₅ Who is the person who overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. ₆ This is He who came through water and blood: Jesus Christ. Not by water only but by water and blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

₇ For there are three who testify: ₈ the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three are in agreement. ₉ If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God: He has testified concerning his Son. ₁₀ The person who believes in the Son of God has the testimony within themself. The person who does not believe in God has made Him a liar, because they have not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. ₁₁ And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. ₁₂ The person who has the Son has life; the person who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

₁₃ I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. ₁₄ And this is the confidence that we have in Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. ₁₅ And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we get the requests that we asked from Him.

₁₆ If anyone sees their brother or sister committing a sin that does not result in death, they shall ask and He shall give them life—that is, to those who commit sin that does not result in death. There is a sin that results in death; I am not saying that one should entreat about that. ₁₇ All unrighteousness is sin, but there is sin that does not result in death.

₁₈ We know that every person who has been born of God does not continue to sin, but the person born of God guards themself and the evil one is not able to take hold of them.

₁₉ We know that we are of God and the whole world is subject to the evil one. ₂₀ We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

₂₁ Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
