Acknowledgments

A Chinese proverb advises “when you drink from the stream, remember the spring.” For many years I have guzzled from an intellectual stream without stopping to recall its headwaters. Intellectually and socially, I have many springs to acknowledge.

Thanks first must go to Dr. Nancy F. Gabin, who shepherded me not only through the dissertation but through graduate school. As a friend, employer, confidante, and sounding board, she has served me well and earned the title of mentor. Much thanks. I also benefitted immensely from the other members of my dissertation committee—Professors Jon Teaford, Michael Morrison, and Frank Lambert. Their help unquestionably improved the final document, and their friendship improved my life. Other professors in the Department of History including Harold Woodman Ariel de la Fuente enriched my studies by introducing me to ideas and methodologies outside my field. My comrade-in-arms, Dr. Timothy Berg, deserves special recognition for his advise and dear friendship.

Most importantly, my parents, parents-in-law, and family members supported and cajoled me through a long process that largely occurred from a long distance. Debts have been incurred that can never be repaid. Above all, my wife Suzanne did just about everything else to make this possible. It is for her.
