Scholars and Saints explain some of the atrocities experienced by the early Church members in Missouri in this issue of BYU Studies. Stephen C. LeSueur examines the trial of Joseph Smith in Richmond, Missouri, which has often been termed the sham trial. Clark V. Johnson, in The Missouri Redress Petitions: A Reappraisal of Mormon Persecutions in Missouri, documents many of the abuses experienced by the Saints. Lastly, Leland H. Gentry discusses the creation of Daviess county for the settlement of the saints in Missouri, which was later taken illegally after an extermination order was issued.
