Waking

Poem

The trees slip away before
I can see. Maybe a wolf

comes back to the Yellowstone
or an ocean calls her lost child

(a shearwater’s voice gleaning
a wave) and I can’t answer.

Then out of the night my room
returns its familiar windows
and walls, a door I can open.
