Harrison Powley
Harrison Powley is Karl G. Maeser General Education Professor of Music at Brigham Young University. He received his PhD in Historical Musicology at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. He recently completed a four-year term as president of The American Musical Instrument Society. The author gratefully acknowledges Dr. Albert R. Rice and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Stradner for their generosity in sharing their vast knowledge of eighteenth-century musical instruments. They have pointed me toward paths I would not have followed and reminded me, as the Three Genies remind Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, when to use the Zauberglöckchen (2.29).
