| Ague | Intermitting fever with cold and hot fits. |
| Allopathic hands | Of or relating to the practice of allopathy; method of treating disease. |
| Alpatcas | Fine wool made from alpaca hair. |
| Alum | Mineral salt with an acid taste. |
| Animal magnetism | Study of health and life energy (often through hypnosis and other non-verbal methods) that resides in bodies of animate beings. |
| Annual plants | Plants that have a one year duration. |
| Antimonial wine | Used for medicinal purposes; induces vomiting. |
| Arrow root | Used for extracting virus caused by poisoned arrows. |
